Welcome to the Organ Transplant Awareness Program of New Mexico.

Howard Yee

My transplant in 2002 was caused by Hepatitis B. The transplant was done at Mayo Clinic in Arizona because there are no hospitals in New Mexico doing liver transplants. My transplant was a live-liver transplant. My wife gave me 65% of her liver, a really priceless gift.

We are frequently asked how we matched because medically I am 100% Asian, and Margo is Caucasian. In live-liver transplants the matching isn’t as stringent as with kidney transplants. The liver needed to be large enough and our blood type needed to be compatible. My wife had the one subgroup of the A blood type that works with a type O recipient, like myself.

I feel incredibly blessed even though I had some complications after the transplant.
